Julia is a multi-award winning writer, director and performer and has been working across stage and screen for 2 decades. A native Gael from the Isle of Lewis, she was born in Australia and grew up in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia before moving to London to train as an actor. She now lives in Glasgow with her two children and husband her long-term collaborator Kieran Hurley with whom she is co-Artistic Director of radical theatre company Disaster Plan. Her first play won the Playwrights Studio New Writers Award and she has since won the Dario Fo Award for Drama, Underwire Best Screenplay. Fellowships include being the 2020-21 IASH creative fellow and the 2022-23 Marilyn Imrie fellow and her. She is committed to telling triumphant, feminist stories of survival, often incorporating music and always with humour.
